SKI TRIP on HARDANGERVIDDA
Join us for a trip in the Norwegian mountains as we cross Europe’s greatest mountain plateau and the largest national park in Scandinavia. The Hardangervidda plateau covers about 8500 km² and it was used by Amundsen for his training before his expedition to the South Pole. The whole of the Hardangervidda is above the tree line. This is the furthest south in Europe that you’ll find arctic flora and fauna.
We provide tester trips for beginners, where we cover little distance and experience sleeping out in the winter. We can use either cross country skis or snow shoes for this trip.
Standard 3 days trip
Our 3 days trip starts from road number 7 between Haugastol and Eidfjord. We head south along the eastern border of the national park. We will adjust the distance covered daily, according to the capabilities of the group. The end of trip is either at Uvdal or Imingfjell, where we will arrange a pick-up. We strongly recommend prior experience with cross country skis. The trip requires a moderate/high level of physical fitness. It is a strenuous trip – we will be skiing approximately 7- 8 hours a day including breaks, each pulling sledges that weigh circa 15-20 kg. We will be completely self-sufficient, and we’ll each pull sledges with the equipment and supplies needed for the duration of the trip.
We will sleep in tents at night. Due to an average elevation of 1,100 meters on the open and exposed plateau, the weather conditions can at times be challenging. Extreme winds and whiteouts can make it difficult to gain ground, and we need to be prepared for all types of weather. Experience of managing yourself in challenging conditions will be important.
However, at this time of year the conditions should be excellent.
